Are One-to-One Reformer Pilates Sessions for You?

You may not need a tougher workout. You may need someone to notice that one shoulder always lifts, that your breath disappears when an exercise feels challenging, or that your lower back is doing more work than it needs to. One-to-one Reformer Pilates sessions create the space for exactly that kind of attentive, encouraging support.

The Reformer is a wonderfully versatile piece of Pilates equipment, using springs, straps and a moving carriage to offer resistance and assistance. In a private session, every part of the practice can be shaped around you: how you feel on the day, what your body needs and where you would like to feel stronger, freer or more at ease.

What makes one-to-one Reformer Pilates sessions different?

A group class can be motivating, sociable and a brilliant way to build a regular movement habit. A one-to-one session offers something more individual. Rather than following a shared sequence, you have dedicated guidance from start to finish, with exercises selected and adapted for your body.

That does not mean every session has to be intense. Some days, you may be ready to challenge your balance, control and strength. On other days, a more gentle approach may help you release stiffness, reconnect with your breath and leave feeling settled rather than depleted. Both can be meaningful progress.

Private Reformer work is especially helpful when you are new to Pilates and would like to learn at a comfortable pace. It can also be valuable if you have practised for years but feel ready to refine your technique and move beyond familiar patterns. There is no performance standard to meet. The focus is simply on helping you move better, breathe deeper and feel stronger.

A session built around your body, not a generic routine

Your first session should begin with a conversation. You might discuss your current activity levels, any areas of tightness or discomfort, previous injuries, your goals and how movement feels for you right now. This gives your instructor a clearer picture than a questionnaire ever could.

From there, the Reformer can be adjusted to suit you. Spring resistance may be changed to make an exercise more supportive or more challenging. The footbar, headrest and straps can all be set up with your proportions and comfort in mind. Small adjustments matter. They can help you feel the intended muscles working instead of compensating through your neck, hips or lower back.

Clear cues are one of the greatest benefits of private teaching. You may be guided to soften your ribs, lengthen through the crown of your head or exhale more fully as you move. These details are not about chasing perfect form. They are about developing body awareness, so movement becomes more efficient, confident and comfortable both on and off the Reformer.

Building functional strength

Pilates is often associated with the core, and for good reason. A well-taught session can strengthen the muscles that support your trunk and pelvis, helping you feel more stable in everyday movement. But Reformer Pilates is not only about abdominal work.

A balanced programme can build strength through the legs, glutes, back, arms and shoulders while encouraging mobility and control. This may support you when carrying shopping, climbing stairs, sitting at a desk or returning to activities you enjoy. The aim is not to make your body look a certain way. It is to help it feel capable and supported.

Easing stiffness without forcing a stretch

If you spend long days sitting, driving or caring for others, it is common to feel tight through the hips, chest, spine and shoulders. A private Reformer session allows time to explore these areas gradually. Rather than pushing into a position, you can use the springs to create gentle feedback and support.

Flexibility often improves when the body feels safe enough to let go of unnecessary tension. That is why pace and breathing matter. Moving with care can be just as effective as working hard, particularly when stress has left you feeling disconnected from your body.

Who can benefit from private Reformer sessions?

One-to-one instruction can suit many people, from complete beginners to experienced movers. It is a particularly reassuring choice if you feel nervous about joining a class or unsure whether you are doing exercises correctly. You can ask questions as they arise and take time to understand the foundations.

It may also be a supportive option if you are returning to movement after a break. Perhaps work, family life, illness or a loss of confidence has changed your relationship with exercise. Starting privately can remove the pressure to keep up and help you rebuild a routine that feels realistic.

For more experienced Pilates clients, private sessions provide an opportunity to work with greater precision. You may want to develop control in a particular movement, improve your posture for another sport, or add variety to an existing programme. A skilled instructor can progress exercises thoughtfully rather than simply making them harder.

If you are managing pain, have had surgery, are pregnant, or have a medical condition, it is sensible to seek advice from your GP, physiotherapist or relevant healthcare professional before beginning. Pilates can be adapted in many ways, but private sessions are not a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. Sharing relevant information helps your instructor plan safely and appropriately.

What to expect in your first session

You do not need special experience or a certain fitness level to begin. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move, and bring socks with grips if requested. Most importantly, arrive as you are. Feeling awkward or unsure at first is completely normal.

After talking through your needs, you will be shown how the Reformer works and guided through a series of accessible movements. Your instructor will demonstrate, observe and offer options throughout. You may spend time learning how to find a comfortable neutral position, practise breathing with control, mobilise your spine, strengthen your legs and connect with your centre.

You should leave with a clearer sense of how your body moves, not with the feeling that you have been pushed beyond your limits. A little muscle fatigue can be expected, especially when you are trying something new, but pain is not the goal. Let your instructor know straight away if something does not feel right.

Is one-to-one always the best choice?

Not necessarily. The best format is the one you can enjoy and attend consistently. Private sessions offer the highest level of personal attention, but they are a greater financial investment than group classes. For some people, regular group practice alongside an occasional one-to-one check-in is an excellent balance.

A two-to-one Reformer session can also work beautifully if you would feel more comfortable practising with a friend or partner. You still receive close guidance while sharing the experience and cost. It is most suitable when both people have broadly compatible needs and are happy to work at a similar pace.

If you love the energy of a group, there is no reason to give that up. Think of private tuition as a way to deepen your understanding, address specific goals or create a supportive starting point before joining others. At Reform Revitalise Release, Helen Kings approaches each session with the belief that Pilates should meet you where you are, not ask you to fit a mould.

How often should you book?

Consistency matters more than intensity. Weekly sessions can be a helpful rhythm when you are learning the foundations, managing ongoing stiffness or working towards a specific goal. Fortnightly sessions may suit you if you are combining Reformer Pilates with walking, strength training, mat Pilates or another form of movement.

Pay attention to what changes between sessions. You may notice you sit taller at your desk, feel steadier on one leg, breathe more easily or recover more quickly from a busy week. Progress is not always dramatic, and it is rarely linear. It is often found in the small moments when your body feels less like something to battle and more like a place you can trust.

A one-to-one Reformer session is an hour set aside for your own wellbeing: time to strengthen, lengthen, breathe and be properly guided. Start gently if you need to. Your path to feeling more at home in your body can begin with one considered movement.
